Thread regarding Pearson PLC layoffs

Pearson NSM

So I'm an inhouse employee in Boston -- I'm currently working 10 hour days pushing projects through to get ready for the higher ed sales force. While I am working like crazy to get everything done for successful delivery, I see lots of wasted time with the reps at their sales meeting in San Diego. I don't mean sitting in sessions listening about product or strategy. My reps keep sending me pics of them lounging around the beach/pool during our work hours, managers and their sales teams taking shots of liquor at a bar, and a group of golfers teeing off. Is it me or is there something wrong with this picture? Isn't the company bleeding right now which is causing layoffs and no pay increases? How does the company afford to have a million dollar meeting yet there are layoffs throughout the year?

The work of this person you speak of has resulted in a large team that has grown steadily while significantly increasing its output every year, even during times when Pearson is feeling the full failure of its outdated business models. A large portion of the business is reorienting itself around what this person's team has been doing for years (it's more about customer-tailored digital services, not just "media"). I've personally witnessed this person's work come to fruition in a way that dramatically improved the business, how people work in it, and the customer outcomes./

Explains why Pearson digital products have such a sh*tty reputation and constantly break or lock out customers.

There is a lot to criticize of Pearson, and many of the decisions made both collectively and individually, and this is a great forum for that... but you're dead wrong here. If you were first on the chopping block on a successful team like that, and now you're here slandering the leadership you failed to learn from, maybe it's time for some self-reflection. How great are your skillllz anyway?/

Laughable. Yes, lieutenant had "skillllz" and educated staff, not the VP in any way. This individual also had zero people skills. "Successful team" doesn't explain staff walking away (with no job lined up) due to the ridiculous workload. Doesn't explain why everyone's technical skills decline by being reduced to virtual traffic managers when any real technical work is done outside by vendors.

When or how did I bring gender into the discussion? I allegedly have a history of misogyny? Shame on you. Looking at your comments, I see you as more of the problem at Pearson and less of the solution.

That was by far the worst NSM to date. They will never figure out how to alot time for the sessions. Not enough time and not every marketing team deserves time to speak. Focus on the $ makers that are coming out. Not the 5 copy adoption.

There were so many new faces I almost thought I had walked into the wrong meeting. It's sad. They tried to make everyone feel good by giving everyone awards and it had the opposite effect. So over people winning these major awards when their sales are basicallly fraudulent sales. Having customers or book brokers order a ton of product so that you can hit/inflate your number- just for them to return it - isn't sales. So glad we are on Net now. Funny how all these $8 million territories are now only $3-4 million.

There is no new/forward thinking at this company- and that was apparent at this meeting. Now I'm at home having to answer questions from management like "why are your bookstores down? Find out when and how much they plan on ordering and get it to me by the end of the day" ummmmm HELLO. they aren't going to order! Everyone is going to Amazon- this is not new knowledge! When wil pearson wake up and go direct to consumers. Bookstore days are OVER and have been over for YEARS.

To the not-so-anonymous person who wrote the following bits:

"I would also add that Boston managers had limited technical knowledge or skills."

"There was a VP of Media (digital) who virtually had no technical skills or knowledge who only came to Pearson (from Cengage) by bringing along a lieutenant who actually had some technical knowledge."

"She would never had survived without him. Pathetic."

You kidding me?

To the person that posted about the full agenda, does that include the boat cruise around the San Diego harbor, the company funded 5K (for no charity), the live band and open bar?

I saw pics of people at the awards banquet of reps who are celebrating goal achievement like they won the Super Bowl. Aren't sales professionals supposed and expected to make goal? I guess when they get that promised bonus check they might not be celebrating that same way knowing the company found a way to screw them out of their bonus. I would like to hear more about how the company is saving money other than laying off people.

Is it just me or have they been giving awards out for days? Congratulations on a successful year guys. Down over 300 million now that's impressive!

by | Post ID:

I was at the awards show and it is a joke that everyone got the participation trophy. I got one and forgot to take it back to my room, so probably was discarded. I don't want a participation trophy--I want my commission that they continue to screw me out of. Most of the veterans know that this is a mask to improve morale and make the company look they are rebounding after massive revenue losses, layoffs, and unfit executive management decisions. I don't want to take selfies while on stage, boomerangs of the team doing tequila shots, or hug it out with the rep who made their goal for the first time in 5 years. Please just stop screwing me out of my bonus so I can leave this toxic company as soon as possible.

by | Post ID:

Back when Pearson was a real company you only got an award if you were a top performer and they made a big deal out of it. You didn't get one just because you made goal much less if you didn't make goal. Now they are handing awards out like coaches at the end of a kids soccer season. It truly is a joke of a company. It's embarrassing to read the Pearson managers "Director of Fun" titles on LinkedIn. What a difference a few years makes.

Down $300 million and rewarded for making goal? Sounds like a standard HSSL bonus plan.

by | Post ID:

Yes- people that only hit the 5 month goal got to walk. All for appearances. Seriously the biggest joke for sales awards. Pearson was down 300 million in higher education. But yet they let hundreds of reps walk as goal achievers. LOL.

by | Post ID:

So I guess every rep got goal achiever even if they made their number or not? 😂 What a joke.

Do Boston managers still skip out and leave around 3:30-4pm?

I worked in the Boston office until 2016 and routinely saw directors and higher bailing around that time regularly, not just on a Friday or before a holiday.

I would also add that Boston managers had limited technical knowledge or skills. Amazing as Fallon was trying to remake Pearson a digital company. Staggering. There was a VP of Media (digital) who virtually had no technical skills or knowledge who only came to Pearson (from Cengage) by bringing along a lieutenant who actually had some technical knowledge.

She would never had survived without him. Pathetic.

And teams buying bottles of Dom Perignon champagne.

I agree with the other poster tho. Feel sorry for reps bc their management is the worst. Which is why Pearson is in the condition it's in. The managers blame the reps for everything while they sit at home claiming they are working campus with the reps.

by | Post ID:

You should pity the reps. The other 51 weeks a year, they have to sell broken, worthless technology and deal with the absolute worst management team...and Pearson regularly robs them blind on commissions/bonuses.

by | Post ID:

The reps just started arriving last night/this morning and the first session began at 2 pm. It's a full agenda from now 'til the end.

by | Post ID:

Happened to me as well. That's how things work here.

by | Post ID:

"Is it me, or is there something wrong with this picture?"

The answer is yes and yes. You are complicit because you put in extra hours to make up for someone else's incompetence. This does you no favors. It merely supports the company assumption that you are putty waiting to be molded. The reps, partying and yucking it up, are a siphon right off the top line. They are parasites my nature and by function. But they can do this because there are multiple people like you enabling the behavior. Solution: do NOTHING extra. It only prolongs your agony.
