SKK had and still has its strengths in its MFG and high quality tools (Fluid analysis MRFA, LFA, OFA, FLCN, Telemetry EDTC, Borehole seismic VSI, Sonic DSI, SCMT, FPIT, SonicScanner, SonicScope, KAI, etc...) mostly inherited historically from other major centers (HFE and SRFE), but still it was a fertile ground of significant technology improvements of these products by talented engineers with endless dedication and japanese monotsukuri spirit (art or craft of creating and perfecting things).

I guess SLB top management has finally put the nails on the coffin of this ENG (improvement engineering) team after realizing the TCO of new product development in Japan is very high compared to other locations in western hemisphere and kept the best that Japan has to offer which is high precision & high quality manufacturing...

As a former employee at in SKK in both ENG and MFG, I really feel for my former colleagues and this only marks the officialisation of such decision long pending since early 2000s, despite many efforts of SKK management by then to turn around the situation.

The ENG will be shutting down completely by next year. A lot were already laid off this month.

It is really sad what is happening.

For those not familiar, SKK developed and produces tools like [WL] Sonic Scanner, VSI, EDTC, PPC, MDT modules, and [DnM] SonicScope, among other tools.

The rest of the people left in ENG will be released sometime next year. Their death sentences are already written. Just don't know when that call is going to come. Everyday we have to come to work not knowing if that will be the last day.

The mood is depressing. People left in ENG has no motivation to work. Mostly because they know they will be out of a job next year and partly because of the sadness of ENG shutting down.

It's sad it has come to the point that we no longer value technology or innovation and putting all (or almost all) our eggs on going digital.

Wishing fellow SKK engineers all the best.
