Healthcare coverage question

Does anyone here know if we are laid off at the beginning of Jan, if our health coverage continues through the end of the month? What about FSA and HRA? I have some procedures scheduled in Jan but after my separation date. I suppose I could purchase COBRA but I have coverage on my wife's plan, but want to use up my FSA and HRA rather than pay deductible on wife's plan.

I couldn't find any info on OneHR. I was on hold dialing in on Fri but will try again on Tue to get an answer from the Benefits Center 800 number. I figured since so many of us affected, someone might know.

Healthcare plan runs till wnd of the month. You can use the full FSA amount even if you havent made all the deductions. A small caveat here—you eligibility for FSA ends the last day of your work. So if you were laid off and last date was jan5-your health plan will cover you until jan 31.But you can only use FSA for eligible expenses incurred uptil jan 5. Though you can file reimbursement for expenses before jan 5 until end of Jan.

My recollection of FSA's is they are fully funded by the employer at the beginning of the calendar year and therefore the full amount is available for use by the employee at that time. You are just repaying the employer via your paycheck deduction; but you would still get to use those funds even after your layoff, until the end of the year or until the funds are exhausted. But, verify that through HR and get it documented. Best wishes on the procedure and for a full recovery.

Post ID: :: Have official one on one meeting with HR and get every thing straighten out and answered BEFORE you walk out the door. Benefits call center is basically useless often inconsistent answers given to the same question by different person. Off the street hires, cheap help. This is from my own experience. Also, please note that a laid off GE employee is entitled to 6 months of health insurance and 18 months COBRA after that. Did they reduce benefits?

I was already given 60 days notice so my separation date is first week in Jan. I had these procedures scheduled before I knew about and couldn't move them to Dec. I have a rare condition and need a specialist - all covered under most health plans, but just trying to work out the optimal path.

I called into Benefits Center but was on hold and had to drop off. I'm pretty sure we've always been told if you're employed on the 1st of the month, your health coverage is through that month. But I'm not sure about FSA/HRA where I have use-it-or-lose-it funds which would be great to use for my procedure.

Yes. All health plans go through the end if the month and then you can COBRA at the GE rate for the next 6 months. After 6 months, the COBRA rates go way up. Besides, if GE lays you off in Jan, even if you are walked off site, your end date will probably be the last of the month not effective the day they tell you.

You should get off your a$$ a bit more and exercise that way you would be healthier and not have to worry about it. Also eat less.
