So I completed all the background checks today and I start at AT&T in mid January. I’m waiting until the 1st for sure. Because I’ve heard of them accepting notices instantly. The only reason I ask is because I want to get paid out my vacation days. I know some companies won’t pay everything you’re owed if you don’t give a notice. Any input or stories about how other ppl have left would be greatly appreciated. Also what are some things I should make sure I get done before I leave? Thanks everyone.

Thanks for all the "lectures" on morals. Verizon is flailing -- I was an XO Employee for ten years then got laid off from Verizon -- because they're going in the third new direction, since they bought us in the last year. They're like the original AT&T -- rudderless selling off divisions and laying bigger and bigger chunks of employees off. What is their "great hope"? Two failed companies, Yahoo and AOL that are supposed to magically blend into one successful company (if they can lay off enough employees, fast enough, that is). They charge a premium price for wireless because they "are" the best -- you don't stay the best if you keep laying off customer support. So can they continue to charge a premium price for "just about the same" service -- I don't think so. Hans Vestberg was fired from Ericsson during a corruption probe. Even if he wasn't "legally" corrupt he did all he could to line his own pockets by laying off employees. Look what he did for Ericsson -- that's what he plans to do for Verizon. Ericsson continues the "magic policy" of laying off employees and ignoring customers. It's not working out for them.
Am I sour grapes? Sure. I worked for a company that built a national fiber network that was lean on employees. We all wore many hats and were proud of what we did. When Verizon bought us they gushed about how they loved, loved, loved us -- such great employees -- most of us (except headquarters, etc. employees) were told we had a happy home. Reality? I was "mapped" to a new Verizon manager months ago. Never talked to me -- never even knew what I did for the company. No clue. When the slaughter is finally over, out of 2,500 XO employees, before Verizon, around a 100 to a 125 will still be their (at least until the next round of layoffs).
So -- forgive me if I really don't care about a Verizon employee not taking the "high ground" when it comes to giving a notice and going to work for a "competition".
If you leave for a competitor, that goes in your file. You WON'T be coming back. They'll see to that.

In my opinion, it's not a high moral question. Basically
A) Do you like your coworkers? Or
B) Is there a chance you may want to work at VZ again some day?
If so, give notice to help your coworkers and/or maximize the chance of rehire.
Otherwise, up to you, but in any case I would never tell them who I will be working for. Not their business (except if there is a non compete clause)

Business is business...wait til after the first of the year. Its only a few days away anyway. Then give your notice.
I guess I don't understand why some of you are so bitter. I liked my co-workers and managers and didn't want to leave with no notice, having them scramble to fill my shifts. The right thing to do is to give notice
Are you nuts?! You are employed at will. They can dump you without notice, and you can dump them without notice. Wait till the busiest period of the month and go bye bye. And you s---ers TRAINING YOUR REPLACEMENTS for a lousy couple thousand bucks. Pathetic. Have you no dignity? How do you even face your kids, wife, and yourself after that. Disgusting. I'd train my replacements; I'd give them a bunch of garbage.
Bu!!sh1t. They absolutely will NOT pay you your 2 weeks when going to a competitor. That's straight from my former HRBP.
When I knew I was going to Comcast, I kept it shut until I cleared background. I knew when I told them I was leaving and where I was going that it would be my last day...and I was correct.
To the OP, keep your mouth shut and get what's yours.
Unlike some of the other ppl here who lack integrity, my experience is that you should do the following. 1- Give two weeks 2- Tell them you’re going to AT&T
They will pay you for your two weeks (to avoid lawsuit) and walk you out the door. They will also pay you for your vacation time. You’ll need that extra cash to pay your union dues

I gave a 2 week notice (extended it 2 days to help). But I'm switching industries and even HR was shocked that I was leaving. Higher end performer, great record and a leader. But while I'm leaving due to money I have been positive towards our new hires helping them into their new roles.
If you give your notice and they walk you out the door they usually pay out the two week period. If you have a job that pays a bonus, I would wait til after 1/1 and gradually get the stuff out of your desk and clean up any undone paperwork. Give your 2 weeks notice on 1/2 and then relax. You did well if you got a job at AT&T now with all downloadbesttorrentblog.rus they are going through now. Good luck
Soon as you tell them that you are moving to ATT, they will fire you on the spot. Nothing bad about VZW but you are leaving to a competitor.
I gave two weeks notice and left the first week of January of this year. I had to transition my clients to my peers and wrap up some administrative things, so I kept my head down and stayed the entire two weeks. People who were escorted out before hand were forced out because they were going to work for a competitor or a client, or because they were creation an undue distraction to the rest of the group. I received all of my owed vacation as well as STI without issue.
If you’re going to work for AT&T, my advice is NOT ago share that information with ANYONE. Not your peers and certainly not your leaders. Gossip spreads like wildfire. It’s no one’s business and you are not required to disclose your reasons for leaving, let alone your future new employer.
