AS is all about saving costs and moving work to Bangalore/Dalian.

As someone pointed out it is a growing business for Cisco but if you are a senior engineer /solution architect and your compensation ratio is on the higher side, your discard eligibility bit has been set. Whether or not you will be discarded may or may not have anything to do with performance. I know of a AS resource in India who has been fired three times and each time he finds a way back as a red badge and eventually get it converted to blue.

For some reasons those smart AS engineers are meek as sheep and will do anything to cling on to Cisco. When I asked a friend if he would like to move on his response was that he would miss bock-bock and topic search. Go figure!

The powers be think that by hiring grads and offshoring most of the work to India there will less customer complaints. The customer gets a Cisco badged engjneer on the ground while most work gets down in Bangalore.

In fact there are regular instructions to the AS engineers to offshore work to Bangalore and the AS delivery managers are being measured on the percentage of work being outsourced. When I finally left in 2015 the target was to have 30% of the project being delivered out of GDC as they called it then.

The idea that AS will pick up from SE’s is also happening, however when the deal is won the SE assigned still gets the bonus and you do not even get a pat on the back.. I did a few Pre sales gigs as most of the Cisco SE’s, couldn’t hold a candle when it comes to technology, most of them are pseudo- account managers bearing an engineer’s title.

Even the TAC aren’t safe with the idea being to shut down all TAC centres except for Bangalore and the US. The fact that Brussels and Sydney still exist is on account of customers wanting a local TAC plus it helps that these regions have some of the best TAC engineers on the planet, so they are difficult to replace.

So if you are a grade 4 enginner earthing about 40k US sit where you are unless you find survival to be tough. If you are grade 10 with a comp ratio above 1.25 your discard eligibility is already set. If you are grade 12-13 you are f---ed if you don’t have a project like the NBN in Australia or the Reliance project. The new Cisco is about cheap labour irrespective of the business unit you belong to.

AS is the most stable arm of Cisco and going forward Cisco is going to be mainly focused on Software and Services so most unstable area to be in in Cisco is Engineering and most stable is Services.

AS is trying to cut their way to better profitability. They cut a lot of G12 and G13 people this round, and a few poor performers. Their New Hope is in software to do the job that a small army of Indian's are doing today. Probably doable in the short term.

The new APJC lead speaks great english, but his words are empty - almost as empty are the words of the new global delivery lead. Yager-bomb - what the hell does this guy even do? And who is this head of USA local delivery - ThePeace - where's he come from - he's a clown! The SVP of AS has made some good moves, but his senior team are full of bullshoot artistes. Sadly the bench in leadership skills is looking pretty skinny. So No. AS leadership is doomed. Services overall SVP is clueless... almost as bad as EddieOverTheBeak.

With continuing limits to back filling senior SE's and technical sales roles, AS is having to pick up the slack. Given an AS engineer of an equivalent grade gets ~40% less than an SE of the same grade, and typically has more technical skills, this is not such a terrible thing.

That said, massive re-org in AS where pretty much 50% are now considered as part of the off-shore team means that 50% of AS are now competing head to head with teams in India, China, Mexico, and Poland to keep their jobs.

So if you're able to do the job of an SE, and are happy to do it for less than market rates, your safe. If someone in India or Mexico, who is hungry for promo, can do your job at least 50% as effectively as you... start working on your sales skills.
