Thread regarding GE Power layoffs

GE Power - Field Core Disaster

GE Power service recently fired all their turbine technical advisors and told them can come back as temp agency Field Core employees with huge pay and benefit cuts.

Much worse is they will no longer get overtime pay for typical 60 and 84 hour weeks, many times all night and on holidays working in customers power plants and on the road away from home. Many immediately quit, some even walked off job sites with turbines open for maintenance outages.

We hear many have called competitors where experts like generator specialists are being scooped up. Now new outfit Field Core is desperate to get technical advisors because of huge shortages for committed installation and maintenance work with customers.

Anyone have more details on this unfolding disaster?

I feel really bad from my colleagues from GE this is coming from a current Field Service from Siemens. I really hope that all those guys get job because only they know the sacrifice we have to make to keep those equipment running to the cost of families, kids, love ones, etc.

My best wishes to all field guys out here

Boiler Side Too - WOW

Boiler experts who know all the codes, welding, materials and can troubleshoot all the systems are worth their weight in gold and are in big demand by utilities and power plant owners. Also they don't have to be on time road all the time. Doesn't GE Power know they are gong to lose all their workers, and reputation. Is any one in management that even knows the business anymore?

What percentage of the boiler guys quit so far, and how are the customers taking it

Wow, I was an employee of GE Power for 20 years, graduated from the Field Engineering Program in 1982. In 1998 I decided it was time to go, I saw morons with no turbine experience running business units, their claim to fame was that they were Six Sigma Black Belts. Most of the clowns would not know what a turbine looked like if it was dropped on their heads. I left and I never looked backed.

When I started at GE Power everyone was a FEP graduate and knew the business inside and out. It will be interesting to see how GE will support their customer base when the field engineers which were so highly looked upon by management have had their pay cut, benefits reduced and eliminated the overtime pay to what it is now. Does GE management really think people want to work for free?

It is going to take a long time for GE Power to recover, when you look at the competitors for service and shop work they far more superior, faster and more economical than GE.

Sounds to me like the lack of supply will push up wages. Supply and demand is a wonderful thing.

Same on the boiler side.
