Former Intel president launches new chip company with backing from Carlyle Group

Ampere, a new chip company run by former Intel president Renee James, came out of stealth today with a brand-new highly efficient Arm-based server chip targeted at hyperscale data centers.

The company's first chip is a custom core Armv8-A 64-bit server operating at up to 3.3 GHz with 1TB of memory at a power envelope of 125 watts. Although James was not ready to share pricing, she promised that the chip would offer unsurpassed price/performance that would exceed any high performance computing chip out there.

The company has a couple of other products in the works as well, which it will unveil in the future

It takes a ton of money and some guts to launch a chip company, but James, who worked at Intel for 28 years, had the pedigree to pull in a highly experienced team of industry heavyweights to build the product. The company is being backed by The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm where James worked briefly after leaving Intel. She would not disclose the amount of funding, but did say her company was significantly well capitalized.

This is just AMCC X-Gene in new clothes - it was a dud a few years back, and sure it probably improved, but it doesn’t seem compelling now that Epyc is out and competing.

RJ was over promoted and bought the dog that was McAfee. This is another dog. Intel needs competition but this isn’t it.

She is in a good place. Anything is better than working for Intel anyway.

by | Post ID:

- Right! McAfee was her baby, and NO progress was ever made. Her two-in-a-box with BK wasn't so swell, either. I remember her first public presentations at IDF - really embarrassing. Other than being AG's TA, what did she actually ever do?

by | Post ID:

Because the 55 million in stock she walked out with just isn’t enough. She did nothing while at intel but take from it. Looks like she’s not done taking from intel.

by | Post ID:

I hope she succeeds and engage Intel on a healthy competition on that market space.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

She’s out for blood.

wasn't there a noncompete? and it's not cool to poach

Is DB back at Dennys?

by | Post ID:

I would love to know, how many former Intel employees RJ has hired.

by | Post ID:

She can do it. She surely knows about opportunities that we do not as a result of her experience and inside knowledge. I'll be cheering for her and wish her well.

Yeah ! Now read Noyce's resignation letter from 1968 - applies 100% to today's Intel !! />

History going to repeat itself now with Ampere ....... "Intel was founded in Mountain View, California in 1968 by Gordon E. Moore (of "Moore's law" fame), a chemist, and Robert Noyce, a physicist and co-inventor of the integrated circuit. Arthur Rock (investor and venture capitalist) helped them find investors, while Max Palevsky was on the board from an early stage.[16] Moore and Noyce had left Fairchild Semiconductor to found Intel. Rock was not an employee, but he was an investor and was chairman of the board.[17][18] The total initial investment in Intel was $2.5 million convertible debentures and $10,000 from Rock. Just 2 years later, Intel became a public company via an initial public offering (IPO), raising $6.8 million ($23.50 per share).[17] Intel's third employee was Andy Grove,[19] a chemical engineer, who later ran the company through much of the 1980s and the high-growth 1990s"

She’s ruthless! No holds barred, kick-butt and take no prisoners. Will she make BK suffer?

I’m getting popcorn. This might be entertaining.

by | Post ID:

Murthy should join

by | Post ID:

DB and RJ do not particularly like each other.

by | Post ID:

hell yeah!

by | Post ID:

You go girl

by | Post ID:

Why on earth would DB go there? She landed a sweet gig at Google Cloud.

by | Post ID:

Not sure if she can pull it together though

by | Post ID:

Microsoft, Oracle and Lenovo mentioned as partners. You can bet that Renee and KS over at Lenovo worked closely on this.

by | Post ID:

It would be interesting if DB is going to join her.....

by | Post ID:

BK's approach to treating everyone like crap is starting to catch up.

by | Post ID:

RJ coming back with a vengeance against the back-stabber BK. Karma is a b-tch.
