Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

Laying off people right before retirement

Got laid off from Bits & Drilling Tools a week before Christmas last month. 8 people laid off including me - 62, 61, 60 (that was me) the rest were in the 50’s. Had 4 more months to retirement but it’s all about business climate right?

This is what truly gets me. Two of my coworkers were laid off (not at the same time, but within a year of each other,) and both of them had under six months until retirement. Makes me think that this is very intentional on part of Schlumberger.

It s---s that proving ageism in court is so hard.

Sad to see this for some people, all I can say is this isn't end of the life or happiness, I was laid off but after I found job at this age, I am much more happier, healthier, and no stress at all.

I used to think my job is very important and I used to think I love it, but I was wrong.slb made me really happy by laying me off.

I am still in contact with some people in slb, almost everyone shocked why still there are some people very expensive and very senior with job, while productivity is been 0 for several years.

I just wish one day slb realises this is gong to be a dark chapter in companies history but of course current managers don't know nothing just try to survive.

The point is that for any company, unless you are a clear subject matter expert, such as assembly and cobol programmers for nasa, skills considered dead by younger programmers, but useful in a place where probes from the ‘70s are still active, when you pass an arbitrary mark, which might be 50, 55, 60, or anything else, they think you are just coasting toward retirement.

It’s ageism? Sure it is.

Will you find someone willing to fight for you in a place where there are no unions or any watchdog looking at patterns of layoffs? Heck no.

Here is the thing. Birthday parties are what makes this type of situation so easy. Bob tells everyone oh my birthday is blah blah and I am going to be 60. A party is given, a mental note is given to the hr mgr to look up specific details. Bob is out 61, 62. Why are so many people left surprised?

If you were given a severance package aren't you better off than going straight into retirement.
