Thread regarding NetApp layoffs

A Strange Layoff Correlation

was part of an team at NetApp whose director's position was moved to Bangalore --> 7 months later, the whole team in RTP was laid off (2015 layoff)

joined a different team whose director position was just moved from US to Bangalore --> 9 months later, the whole RTP team was laid off (2016 layoff).

let's just face it, the cost of labor is India is negligible compared the to US, if you're being managed by NB, just get the hell out NetApp.

Check Glassdoor.

"Negligible" is a bit of hyperbole, but from what I can see, it's about 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost to hire someone in Bangalore than it costs to hire someone in RTP and about 1/5 to 1/4 the cost of Sunnyvale.

Example:

Member of Technical Staff III - Annual Salary

Bangalore - ~$26,400 (1,770,774 rupees)

RTP - $100,700

Sunnyvale - $118,000

So it's definitely cheaper to hire in Bangalore than in the States...

It always was and is the cost of labor, that moves many jobs to India. The sooner you realize the better.

Contractor sourcing during projects at NTAP used to (2014) run at 1/3 of the cost for an offshore resource than onshore.

Onshore = US

Offshore = well, could be anywhere, but the big contractors are in India, so India.

There is a lot of speculation here and for someone who has about 20+ yrs of exp in IT, including quite a few years in silicon valley and nearly 4 yrs at NetApp Bangalore (thankfully I left in 2012, but still have many friends in there) here is few things I can say.

Speculation_1: Average salary in Bangalore is below 5 bucks (thats less than US$11K per yr). Even a collage graduate at NB gets more than 2 times that. Average would be way above. More importantly, the overall expense (site, power etc etc) are much higher. I remember in one of my previous jobs, our Bangalore office rent was more than twice of our south San Jose office rent. In one of my another job (where I headed the Bangalore site of a US company), we used the number around $35 per hr and that was a small company with an pretty small office with an address in very low end of the market.

Speculation_2: Lot of jobs are outsourced to Bangalore. That's simply not true. I joined NetApp Bangalore in 2008. What I have seen is, the employee strength in NB has been almost same since 2010 (might have gone up by single digit %).

Speculation_3: Not much layoff at Bangalore. One of my neighbor works at NetApp for nearly 10 yrs and she got laid off last week. What she said is, downloadbesttorrentblog.ru in Bangalore is more than the global average of 10%.

So let's not channel the frustration in wrong direction. Thanks.

I will corraborate

Average wage in it sector in india is a bit below 5 bucks, loaded cost is about 40 pct higher, lets say its seven bucks

In the states, loaded cost in it is about 65 bucks, average, tech/it

Source: I am a director of finance for a fortune 500 company, wife laid off from netapp

Google it, there is a ton of info on the topic - sorry for typos, phone entry

I don't think that's true. Do you have some data to corroborate your claim?
