Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

I am a bass pro employee and I am so excited about the future.

My department had a lengthy meeting a while back. My manager explained to me since the merger happen this is a 10 billion companies, bass pro has close to 200 stores. bass pro has close to 50 thousand employees. and I think everyone is so excited bass pro will take the best of what bass pro has to offer and the best of what Cabela's has to offer and merge them into one company. I like so many people was worried at times of the gloom forecast my some on this site. Right now I know the distribution center has been getting a lot more busy lately . I do agree 100 percent with both Johnny Morris and the mayor of Sidney on wondering if some of those who gained so much from the merger would have given something back to people and a community which made everything possible. Lets all work together instead of some constantly trying to tear this company and this city apart with the constant gloomy forecast. This kind of forecast we have seen in the past on this site which has proven to be 100 percent wrong has only done damage to people in the area. How much is up to debate.

Well now what do you say Mr. Longtime employee/resident?

Regarding The question on the WARN act, no, a general announcement like that would not technically qualify

It is in a company’s best interest to comply with the warm act because there are fines or penalties for non compliance.

Additionally there would be some damage that happens to the companies brand if they don’t comply. I.e. being accused of being heartless, dealing with media fallout, having trouble retaining skilled employees in the future, etcetera...

A question to the person who posted about the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. I’m not familiar with with this act, but JM made it known, that Sidney would be reduced to IT and Accounting personal. I don’t have an exact date of when that statement was put out. Would that qualify as sufficient notification, if made 60 days before the mass layoff?

this person is relentless, Mr. thirty year cableas now bass pro super employee is hear to save us from ourselves.

Beaware that these post came in a very short timeframe which leads me to belive these are a poster pretending to be different posters

No one is saying that Sidney is doomed, however a certain amount of realism should be injected into these arguments. Certain facts cannot be escaped, when validated by different pieces of data.

For instance, in the negative column we find the real estate market data, with the amount of homes on the market versus population, time on market, selling prices and such all trending heavily downward.

On the other hand, We should also consider The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. It requires at least a 60 day notification of a large upcoming reduction in force to the employee, which would indicate that the immediate future for Sidney turning worse quickly. This has not happened.

However, the fact that Bass Pro Shops has retained Career Arc for helping with worker cuts can also be either viewed positively or negatively. It can be viewed as a positive as the company does provide services on helping people find new jobs, work on resumes, coaching, etcetera.

Or it can be viewed as a negative in terms of the fact that they also provide guidance and checklists in things such as and I quote, “How to Conduct a Layoff Notification Meeting: The Complete Guide”.

I am not a pretender, I hope For the best for Sidney, but I won’t blindly ignore facts. I would love for something great to happen, especially for all the people who’s livelihoods are now at stake.

Finally after reading so many posts rants raves etc.

A voice or calm reason is heard from the wilderness only to accused of being an pretender

And then the same ole rhetoric of we need to do something to change the situation.

Sadly enough I believe the die has been cast and there is little that we can do but ride the storm out.

No amount of foot stomping, fit throwing begging pleading or cajoling will change the course set before us.

Sure now I will be labeled a hater by the one with the Messiah complex, but I have hope for the future we can pick up the pieces and from the ashes rebuild our future with or without Bass Pro/Cabela's

Old opportunities are leaving and with a great amount of hope new opportunities will present them selves.

My one desire is that as we rebuild and remake our future we DO NOT place all out future opportunities into one basket and this time diversify to protect ourselves and our children's future

The lengthy response gave a lot of valid details. However there was still the same tone that you wonder if the poster is a pretender. The theory is Sidney has no hope they are doomed to fail and anyone who wants to develop a policy to deal with this situation is a cheerleader or a troll. We need leaders at bass pro, the city of Sidney, the governor office, the county office and each of one of as individual need to ask what we can do to help. The attitude we are doomed accept it is a horrible policy. I am not saying things are not being done at this time.. I am saying we need to explore every avenue out there to deal with this situation.

I agree. Well written post

by | Post ID:

A very clear concise and unbiased post. Thank you for your insight and calm explanation of a very direct situation .

by | Post ID:

I feel so much empathy for everyone at Cabela’s who have been laid off. I’ve read a tremendous amount of the posts here. It seems for every occasional grain of truth, there is five people trolling or just stirring the pot.

I feel for the town of Sidney, and the difficulties that are sure to come next. The inevitable housing bust, the losses of revenue and the other business closures that may follow. The reality of that is all too grim.

The fact that Bass Pro shops owner is willing to ‘gift’ the buildings to the town is also telling. A long time ago in Ohio, Longaberger Basket built a building that was certainly unique back in the 90’s for 32 million during their years of expansive growth. The building was in an odd location an not very useful for anyone else, so when Longaberger had financial difficulties, and eventually closed up shop in the area, the building languished on the market. It sold for little comparatively and was in arrears in taxes.

JM is a great business man. If he wants to donate the building with $1 leases to Sidney it is not because of his generosity, all though I am sure there is some and he doesn’t want the town of Sidney to go Down in flames, but more likely because he believes that the building will much be a liability like the Longaberger basket building was. Having a new multi million dollar office building you don’t need, can’t sell and have to pay upkeep and taxes on, doesn’t have a positive net value after a while.

Sidney’s location doesn’t lend itself well to another large corporation just setting up shop, and moving in with the kind of jobs Cabella’s provides, despite the cheery articles about this or that small business coming to town with a fraction of the jobs that Cabellas corporate offices provide. Let alone the type of jobs that are coming in compared to those that are lost.

Furthermore, the isolation of such a town becomes debilitating in times of job loss when there aren’t similar industries and opportunities within commuting distance. It becomes harder for people to want to relocate to such a place when they realize the danger of jobless comes coupled with an even tougher time finding a like job, or selling their home in a depressed market.

If you look past the trolling posts, the cheerleaders, and the worst case scenario posters, you can see the truth. Sidney Nebraska is in trouble with all downloadbesttorrentblog.rus and downsizing that is coming and I feel for everyone affected.

Yeah I do not give them a F-. If you are seriously saying F-, I am thinking you have a listening problem.

I am not arguing it was A standard but atleast it was something

by | Post ID:

I do not think you realize how difficult this merger is. I think bass pro is working to make sure the best of bass pro and the very best of Cabela's is combined into one company. Therefore the answers to the question you ask bass pro probably doesn't even know the answers a lot of time.

by | Post ID:

how would you rate cabelascommunication process ? if you didn't give them a F-. you are totally wrong

by | Post ID:

I agree with a previous poster that the level of animosity and uncertaintity is actually driven by Bass Pros leadership team.

Just communicate wither way are we staying part of the team or part of the elimination process.

Bass Pros communication process is down right terrible

by | Post ID:

Look at the post on this site and what has been stated. I have stated several of the positives of bass pro locating in Sidney Nebraska. I have voiced concerns on this website for the employees who was laid off and made suggestion of ways I believe could ease the burden they are facing. In the past I have given almost one percent of my wage to help the employee foundation to help those with a hardship In their life. . I also can provide evidence of Cabela's employee who I made a big difference in their life when they were facing a severe hardship. I as an employee of bass pro and a residence of Sidney I am going to try and do more for those layoff. In companion I have been attacked my someone whose basic position on this website is Cabela's was a total worthless company and now bass pro is a totally worthless company. In regard to the laid off workers HIS WAY OF THINKING the company or the directors owe you nothing and you need TO accept your situation and get on WITH YOUR LIFE AND DON'T EXPECT ANY ASSISTANCE.

Nope...Mi Ranchito :)

I heard Runza is closing :)

by | Post ID:

Truly clueless

by | Post ID:

the previous poster hijacks everythread with his rainbows and unicorns posts and accuses just one individual for all the problems on sidney and the surrounding area as well as what was cabelas

This poster is nothing but a troll just looking for attention and will do anything to accomplish it. How about we just ignore him and maybe he will go away

by | Post ID:

Let me get this right a poster can not post a comment if it is positive about bass pro. They need to get off this site if they do. Wow

by | Post ID:

I am just curious do you make the rules what is allowed on this site? You so often are telling people to get off this site if they post a positive comment about Cabela's or bass pro. You have posted negative comment after negative comment which turned out to be 100 percent untrue in the last six months . I think you latest comment on Applebee's may get this site closed down however. It was completely uncalled for and it would be hard for a site to accept this comment as relevant to this debate. I think the future of bass pro is very relevant subject on this board

by | Post ID:

Free baby unicorns for EVERYONE!

by | Post ID:

You have no tact. People are losing there jobs and you go to downloadbesttorrentblog.ru board to brag that you are company guy and love the place. IT"S A LAYOFF BOARD. We are really happy for you. Now get off the site...you made it clear your job is secure.

Truly clueless

by | Post ID:

Odd comment now I don't care about anyone. A while back I am this stupid and dumb poster who is the reason Cabela went out of business BECAUSE I AM PROPOSING EVERYTHING I CAN TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT TO GET ASSISTANCE TO AN EMPLOYEE WHO WAS LAID OFF.

by | Post ID:

I just wish people would proofread their post before submitting

by | Post ID:

Im a little a-- kisser and I love Bass Pro!

Nah Nah naw naw.

Im better than you...I ve been at Cabelas for 30 yrs and I m excited about my future!!!!!

Hah Hah

by | Post ID:

I get a kick out of you . Who lives in never never land. Is it poster who predicted bass pro was buying Cabela's to do away with competitor and would fire every Cabela's employee nation wide when the merger was complete or was it the poster who stated bass pro would fire 1800 people at corporate when the merger was complete or was it the poster who stated this was an extremely easy merger to complete and it would take no longer then two months and every detail would be completed before the first of the year. You live in your world. I think I live in a world of a lot of reasoning and educated guesses with help from those involved in the situation.

by | Post ID:

Does this never end? Living in never never land will get you no where

by | Post ID:

A lot of this could be fixed with JM communicating with everyone. Here’s how I see it, if we have a future with the company, tell us. If tou’re going to toss us aside like trash, tell us. When you don’t communicate with your employees, you leave a lot open for rumors and such. Personally, I don’t think JM sees us as people. I challenge him to prove me wrong. I love being a Cabela’s employee, but have grown tired of the uncertainty of my future here since nobody seems to be able to communicate a truthful idea of what we have to look forward to. This uncertainty is going to be the cause of many talented people seeking opportunity elsewhere.

by | Post ID:

I agree 100 percent with you finally a person who is stating the truth.
